Digital marketing resume writing tips

Digital marketing is a competitive field. Whether you specialize in SEO, email marketing, or paid advertising, you need a clear, well-written resume to help you stand out from the crowd.

To give your application the best chance of success, here are our top tips for writing a digital marketing resume that lands you the job you want:

1. Highlight your digital marketing skills

Having a clear skills section that advertises your most relevant marketing skills is essential to getting the attention of any hiring manager.

To show employers that you have what it takes to excel on the job, here are some of the top technical skills you should include on your digital marketing resume:

  • SEO software: Google Analytics, SEMrush, Ahrefs, Moz, Google Search Console, and Screaming Frog
  • Paid advertising using Google Ads, Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram, and LinkedIn
  • Keyword research
  • Technical SEO and experience conducting site audits
  • A/B testing and analysis
  • HTML, CSS, and Javascript
  • Email marketing software: MailChimp and Constant Contact
  • Office software: Microsoft Office, G Suite, and Adobe Creative Suite

Success in a digital marketing role also requires various soft skills. For example, soft skills help you work more effectively with other members of your team, or  develop innovative marketing strategies.

To show employers that you’re a well-rounded candidate and potentially valuable member of the team, emphasize some of these important digital marketing soft skills:

  • Adaptability
  • Innovation
  • Creative thinking
  • Time management skills
  • People skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Communication skills

If you have obtained a relevant certification from HubSpot, Hootsuite, or Google Ads, for example, list it in your skills section. However, if you have more than two, create a separate resume section for your certifications.

2. Add hard numbers to your achievements

When you create a resume, remember that success in digital marketing is often measured with data.

Make it easy for employers to understand what you’re capable of achieving by using hard numbers to quantify your past accomplishments.

Not sure what numbers to include? Here are some hard numbers to consider including on your resume:

  • An increase in website traffic (percentage)
  • An increase in sales (percentage)
  • An increase in conversion rates (percentage)
  • Advertising return on investment (dollar amount)
  • Mailing list growth (total number of new subscribers)
  • Open and click-through rates for marketing emails
  • An increase in backlinks and domain authority

Here’s an example of how one candidate quantified their achievements with data on their resume:

  • Enhanced conversion rates by 30% through A/B-tested landing pages for a better performing conversion funnel

By backing up your accomplishments with hard numbers, you prove that you’re results-oriented and keep track of what works and what doesn’t when it comes to marketing strategies. This is crucial to replicating successful results during future campaigns.

3. Tailor your digital marketing resume to the job post

Because the field of digital marketing covers such a diverse range of roles, different job postings will require you to emphasize different skills and qualifications.

Here are some of the most common digital marketing jobs, and the information you should include on your resume for that specific role:

Digital Marketing Manager – One of the broader digital marketing roles out there, although different job listings may require particular skills or experience. Digital Marketing Manager is often a supervisory position, so you should emphasize your leadership skills on your resume.

Digital Marketing Specialist – This position is similar to a that of a Digital Marketing Manager, with the difference that you won’t be in charge of a team. Emphasize your experience with digital marketing software like HubSpot and Mailchimp.

Content Marketing Manager – This role focuses on content and SEO. Include any experience creating content or executing a content marketing strategy for past employers or clients, as well as familiarity with common SEO tools like SEMrush and Google Analytics.

SEO Analyst – This role is similar to a Content Marketing Manager, but focuses specifically on SEO. Highlight your familiarity with SEO tools, as well as any experience you have conducting keyword research or technical site audits.

Search Marketing and/or PPC Specialist – Search Marketing Specialists handle paid advertising campaigns. For this role, mention any experience you have managing advertising campaigns with platforms like Google Ads.

In addition to emphasizing skills relevant to the particular role you’re applying for, you should also make sure to include keywords on your resume.

Resume keywords are words and phrases that describe the employer’s ideal candidate. By adding them to your digital marketing resume, you show employers that you understand the needs of their organization.

Here’s a job posting for a digital marketing role with keywords highlighted in yellow:

If you’re not sure what words to include, take a look through the job listing for the position you want. Then, make a note of any important skills or attributes that are mentioned in the listing.

4. Write an eye-catching digital marketing resume summary

To ensure hiring managers read your resume from start to finish, your digital marketing resume summary needs to capture their attention. This introductory paragraph is placed toward the top of your resume, just below the header.

A well-written resume introduction communicates your professional brand and showcases your key skills and achievements in 2-5 sentences. Focus on abilities that make you an ideal candidate for your target digital marketing role, and mention any qualifications that position you as an expert in the field.

Below is an example of a convincing summary on a resume for a digital marketing manager:

Innovative Digital Marketing Manager with 4+ years of experience managing online marketing campaigns and leading cross-functional teams. Skilled in developing integrated marketing strategies that drive brand awareness, engagement, and conversions. Regularly exceed performance targets and possess advanced analytical and problem solving skills.

If you’re writing a digital marketing resume for an entry-level position, opt for a resume objective instead. This type of introduction is better suited for less experienced applicants.
