Esthetician resume writing tips

An esthetician’s salary largely depends on which state they work in, with Washington and New York offering the highest salaries for skincare specialists.

As a member of such a dynamic industry, you need to understand the latest trends, products, and techniques to command a high salary.

Read on to discover how to give your esthetician resume a touch-up and impress potential employers with your skills and experience.

1. Create a memorable resume introduction

The first thing a hiring manager sees is your resume’s introduction, so make it as compelling as possible to maximize your chances of getting an interview.

Our candidate has opted for a qualifications summary for their introduction.

A summary of qualifications is an excellent choice in this candidate’s case because they can confidently show off all of their major achievements.

Let’s take a look at our esthetician’s resume introduction:

QUALIFICATIONS SUMMARY
  • Developed therapeutic, individually tailored skin care programs for over 300 individuals to date
  • Demonstrated and recommended skin care products to clients, resulting in an average 21% boost in sales of these products
  • Received highest client ratings and garnered most in tips among my colleagues in both workplaces listed below

Each point that the candidate makes in their resume demonstrates a unique achievement in a different part of their job.

From top to bottom, the points above show they excel at developing high-quality skin care programs, upselling skin care products, and impressing clients with their upbeat personality.

When you write a qualifications summary, structure every bullet point to highlight a different aspect of your job, which will show the hiring manager that you’re a well-rounded applicant.

2. Showcase your certifications

To diagnose skin care complaints and provide skin care solutions, you’ll need a license. Each state or territory differs slightly in its requirements, but being properly licensed remains essential.

Whether you’re an esthetician, a stylist, or a barber, adding certifications to your resume lets hiring managers see straight away that you’re professionally certified to perform the job.

Here are the details of our candidate’s certifications:

CERTIFICATIONS

Beauty Operator License
Board of Barbering & Cosmetology
Expires 20XX

Employers scan resumes quickly, so draw attention to your most important sections by displaying your relevant work experiences and certifications clearly.

Your degree may also be crucial if it shows that you’ve specialized in a certain field. Our candidate studied Esthetics, so they included it — and their alma mater — on their resume.

An effective resume education section is essential if your educational background is relevant to the job you’re applying for.

3. Address the employer’s needs

To win your dream esthetician job, convince the hiring manager that you can address their needs.

One effective strategy to get noticed by hiring managers is to use the exact keywords from the job posting in your resume.

Because employers use applicant tracking software (ATS) to filter applicants, ensure your resume is noticed by matching the keywords and skills they’re looking for.

For example, our example esthetician responded to a listing that asked for “knowledge of various cosmetics product lines.”

Because they’re knowledgeable about cosmetics, they included this line:

  • Knowledge in over 17 product lines, including Obagi, Clinique, Estée Lauder, and Dermalogica

This statement illustrates that the candidate can fulfill the responsibilities throughout the job posting, as well as providing specific information to give employers a clear idea of what they can accomplish.

For example, stating that they know 17 product lines provides the hiring manager with valuable knowledge so they can see:

  • where the candidate will fit into the company
  • how much training they might need
  • what to expect from them in the future

4. Use hard numbers

Remember to include hard numbers in your resume, as they provide evidence of your achievements. Your resume introduction and bullet points are ideal places to add hard numbers.

Let’s check out another example:

  • Recommend skin care and cosmetics products to clients, with over 90% of my clients satisfied or very satisfied with my suggestions

This statistic was collected through customer feedback surveys, and shows how popular the candidate is and how much the clients trust the candidate’s recommendations. This statement also acts as extra proof that the candidate can form lasting relationships with clients.

Average esthetician salaries in the US

After you’ve written your resume, make sure you use it to apply for jobs within a fair salary range.

The following table includes information from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics’ latest Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics report for 2025. Here are the ten states with the highest salaries for estheticians, as well as the national average for your reference when applying for work.

Top 10 states by average esthetician salary
