Job responsibilities of a management consultant
Interested in a career as a management consultant but not sure what your day-to-day would look like? Taylor Bell explains it all in this video:
3 management consulting resume writing tips
Management consultants are integral to helping businesses reorganize their processes and drive growth. So it’s no surprise that companies only want the best candidates for the job.
To convince them that you’re the right person to guide their business to success, you’ll need to write a great management consulting resume that highlights your experience, skills, and professional strengths.
Below, we’ve provided 3 tips for writing a great management consultant resume.
1. Use a traditional resume format and design
You’ll need to format your resume for a management consulting position the same way you dress for an interview: conservatively.
Although resumes written for some fields can be unconventional —such as a graphic design resume or a marketing resume — management consulting resumes should be traditional and straightforward.
Stick to classic resume fonts, such as Times New Roman or Calibri, and use chronological order when listing education and your work experience.
Additionally, stick to a simple, mostly black-and-white resume design, and avoid any colorful pictures or graphs. Your resume should be professional and communicate to employers how seriously you take your job as a consultant.
2. Highlight your consulting skills
As a management consultant, businesses and consulting firms will want to know that you have the necessary skills to help their partners and clients solve management issues, maximize growth and profits, and improve their overall business processes.
To show them you’re qualified for the job, your management consultant resume should list hard skills for the position, such as being proficient at strategy and business modeling, project management, and data analysis.
However, soft skills are equally important to have as a consultant. Management consultants need excellent problem solving and critical thinking skills, as well as leadership skills in order to get the job done properly.
Here are 15 management consultation hard and soft skills to include on your resume:
- Proficient in SAP ERP
- Microsoft Office suite
- Change management
- Business process analysis
- Revenue forecasting
- Data analysis
- Project management
- Strategy, business, and financial modeling
- Supply chain management
- Facilitation (meetings, presentations, and workshops)
- Problem-solving
- Critical thinking
- Flexibility and adaptability
- Teamwork
- Organization
Management consultants often work with a variety of international companies, so if you’re proficient in a foreign language, you should list your language skills on your resume as well.
3. Use hard numbers in your experience
As a management consultant, your success is measured in hard numbers – whether that’s dollars saved or growth achieved. To show employers what you’re capable of, your resume should include some of your key accomplishments backed up with hard numbers.
Hard numbers are especially helpful for hiring managers because they paint a clear picture of how you performed and contributed to your previous and current employers.
For management consultants, it’s particularly important to explain in dollar amounts and percentages how you maximized growth, streamlined processes, or saved business expenditures for clients.
Here are two examples of quantified management consulting work experience:
- Drove consumer credit portfolio growth, achieving $10 million in new business development by expanding company services
- Strategized and implemented enterprise-wide SAP ERP solution for a billion-dollar banking institution, resulting in a 70% improvement in critical business processes
