How to write a paramedic resume

As a first responder, you play a critical role in saving people’s lives. But that doesn’t mean getting a paramedic job is easy. Employers need to know they can depend on you to perform well during stressful medical emergencies.

To land an interview, you’ll need to write a convincing paramedic resume with a resume format that shows your relevant training, skills, and expertise.

Below are three tips to get you started with writing your paramedic resume:

1. Highlight your relevant paramedic skills

Paramedics act decisively in life or death situations. So put your job-specific skills in all parts of your resume to show you’re able to expertly handle emergencies.

Applying your technical skills (hard skills you learned through medical training) is critical when it comes to delivering urgent care under pressure. You need to quickly draw on your medical knowledge to assess a patient’s needs and perform life-saving treatments.

Here’s a list of essential hard skills for your paramedic resume:

  • Ambulatory care
  • CPR and first aid
  • EKGs, external defibrillators, resuscitators
  • Heart rate monitoring
  • Life support
  • Pediatric care
  • Preliminary diagnosis

And don’t forget your soft skills (your natural ability to interact with others). Aside from your technical paramedic training, you need the emotional intelligence to comfort patients, stay calm under pressure, and communicate clearly and efficiently.

Give examples on your paramedic resume that show you have interpersonal skills like these ones:

  • Active listening skills
  • Communication skills
  • Problem-solving skills
  • Quick decision making
  • Resilience
  • Teamwork

2. Spotlight your paramedic-related credentials

You’ve undergone extensive training to become a paramedic. Now clearly display your credentials on your resume so hiring managers know you’re qualified to be a first responder.

Show that you’re licensed to practice by listing your qualifications in the education section of your paramedic resume. Here’s an example of how to include your paramedic credentials on your resume:

EDUCATION

Apollo Career Center, Lima, OH

EMT-Basic, December 2015

Honors: cum laude (GPA: 3.8/4.0)

You also need to list any CPR or other paramedic-related courses you completed on your resume, including:

  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)
  • Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
  • Bloodborne pathogen training (BBP)
  • BLSBasic Life Support (BLS)
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)

You can also use your resume’s education section or a certifications section to list specialized training if you have any that’s relevant to the job. For instance, air ambulance training could give you a competitive edge over other applicants.

3. Write a standout paramedic resume summary

Paramedic jobs are competitive, as job seekers look to join an industry projected to grow 11% by 2030. So you need to do everything you can to impress employers. One way to make a good first impression is by writing a compelling resume summary.

A resume summary is a 3–4 sentence paragraph at the top of your resume. Think of this section as a highlight reel of your career. Your paramedic resume summary lists your most job-relevant accomplishments, including the work experience, qualifications, and skills that make you a perfect fit for the role.

Here’s an example of a well-written paramedic resume summary:

Patient-focused health care professional with hands-on experience delivering pre-hospital urgent and quality patient care during intense emergency situations. Knowledgeable with using a wide array of basic and advanced abilities to offer life support and ambulatory care to extremely ill and injured people. Superior communicator forging positive relationships with other emergency responders while exemplifying efforts to remain calm amidst stressful scenarios.

The above example of a paramedic resume summary gives a brief but descriptive overview of the applicant’s top technical skills and experience.

Our paramedic applicant also successfully conveys some of their top soft skills. In just three sentences, this paramedic comes across as highly capable, people-focused, and dependable.
